Match Preview: FC United (H)

Thursday 15/03/2012

The Pitmen welcome sixth-placed FC United on Saturday as one of the best supported teams in the league bring their army of supporters for what will no doubt be a cracking atmosphere and as important a game as any played at Keys Park so far this season.

Hednesford’s 4-0 away victory at bottom-club Burscough on Tuesday means that The Pitmen could open up a nine point lead over their in-form Manchester rivals who sit just three points outside the play-off places.
FC United are one of the form teams in the division having won four of their last six in the league and most recently despatched Stocksbridge 3-0 with Matthew Wolfenden scoring a hat-trick.

The Reds came out deserved winners in the last meeting between the two sides in January with a comfortable 2-0 win which saw Hednesford brought down to earth with a bump after their superb victory over Chester.
The Pitmen certainly owe their hosts having struggled against them both home and away in their past meetings. A late equaliser from FC saw them snatch a 2-2 draw at Keys Park in 2009 and, in the same season, Hednesford were easily despatched 3-0 at Gigg Lane in dense Winter fog.

Some of Hednesford’s play off rivals face equally tricky assignments with Bradford Park Avenue away at league leaders Chester and Chorley travelling to Worksop Town, where The Pitmen lost earlier in the season. Marine host strugglers Whitby Town and Northwich Victoria play Nantwich Town in a game played at Macclesfield’s Moss Rose.

In other news, Chris Brindley’s Chasetown, desperate for a win to ease possible relegation worries, travel to Stafford Rangers in a game that no-doubt Pitmen supporters hope both teams manage to lose.
Should The Pitmen emerge victorious on Saturday daylight will be clear between themselves and the play-off cut off line. The league table could look very much brighter come 5pm.
