Match Preview: Alvechurch FC (H)

Tuesday 05/02/2013

Alvechurch, surprise conquerers of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the previous round, stand between The Pitmen and a place in the semi-final of the Birmingham Senior Cup on Tuesday night as Rob Smith’s side look to continue a strong run of form at Keys Park.

The Hednesford boss, despite the ultimate target being to sustain a title challenge in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division, plans to field a strong team, aware that Cup success can only breed confidence in the league.

‘We will be going strong again tomorrow in terms of team selection regardless of Saturday’s game versus Ashton. We want to progress, are on a good run and want to keep it going.’

Smith admitted some changes will be made but stressed he will send out a team more than strong enough to get the desired result and noted younger players such as Asa Wright, who made his first league appearance as a substitute against Nantwich on Saturday and performed with assured distinction, can use the game to prove themselves.

‘Asa Wright did very well and is a player who is impressing me all the time especially with his terrific attitude. I believe he has a bright future and he will be in the squad tomorrow, with the chance to impress again.’

Hednesford’s opponents recorded a famous victory against a strong Wolves team in December to reach this stage of the competition but have been inconsistent in the Midland Football Alliance First Division this season, currently sitting in 11th place having lost 3-0 at home to Causeway United at the weekend.

On paper The Pitmen are strong favourites, regardless of whether a couple of first-team players are omitted, but Smith will be instilling a will to win the competition into his players.
