Match Preview: Vauxhall Motors (H)

Friday 13/09/2013

Hednesford Town welcome 10th placed Vauxhall Motors to Keys Park on Saturday afternoon, looking to quickly recover from their first defeat in 21 matches last week against North Ferriby United.

Rob Smith’s side had what could safely be described as an ‘off-day’ against last season’s Evo-Stik title rivals, but the manager admitted that, despite a first defeat of the season and one that was always going to come at some stage, he was still concerned about the nature of the reverse.

‘I was and still am worried by the defeat. The most concerning thing was conceding again so early and the way we made it so easy for the opposition. We must improve on Saturday, Vauxhall Motors are another team who are well established and come to Keys Park with an experienced manager and reputation for playing a sharp passing game.’

The Pitmen boss must also wrestle with a mini-injury crisis as Darren Campion (ankle) and Wayne Riley (groin), both missing last week, continue to struggle and there are also doubts about Francino Francis (groin), Aaron Rey (hamstring) and Neil Harvey (back).

Michael Lennon is due to return from a recent personally successful loan stint playing for crisis club Stafford Rangers but will not be available until Tuesday’s fixture versus Histon, whilst Sam Barnes has been given permission to play for Marine with a view to a permanent move. The Pitmen have, however, brought in defender Matthew Regan on loan from Skrill Premier Tamworth.

Depending on the fitness of those regular first team players carrying injuries, it may be down to youngsters Charlie Anagho-Ntamark and Robbie Thompson-Brown to make their mark in a Hednesford shirt.

Hednesford’s last meeting with Vauxhall came on the day they lost their Conference North place back in 2006 when a 0-0 draw wasn’t enough to stave off relegation and Pitmen supporters will no doubt be keen to see their team improve upon that result and get back to winning ways, even with a possibly threadbare line up.

The statistic that Hednesford have lost just two in the last 33 competitive matches and have a 100% record at Keys Park this season at least shows that this squad have made winning a habit during the current calendar year.
