Boss Aims For New Year Top Spot

Tuesday 03/12/2013

Hednesford Town boss Rob Smith has set his Pitmen team the target to stay at the summit of the Skrill North as his Keys Park outfit prepares for a hectic festive schedule full of local derbies and matches against fellow promotion rivals.

The Pitmen travel to rock-bottom Gloucester City on Saturday as they embark on a run of nine games in under a month, before then meeting arch rivals AFC Telford United home and away over Christmas and New Year, last season’s nemesis North Ferriby United, well-fancied Harrogate Town and Warwickshire neighbours Leamington, amongst others.

Smith though is very excited about the run of games ahead but, while aiming high, admits he would be delighted if his team, currently occupying top spot in the Skrill North on goal difference, were in the top three by January 5th.

‘If we come out of Christmas and New Year in the top three I would be delighted, but we must aim to come out of it still in the top spot. January looks very scary in terms of the teams we have to play.

‘We are keen to continue our good form in the league and try to rack up as many points as possible before the Christmas schedule gets in full swing. It’s great for the league that it is so tight. I just cannot see any team breaking away in a competition where anyone can beat anyone, so the coming months should be superb.’

Smith’s side have a triple header of home fixtures after Saturday’s trip with Bradford Park Avenue, the aforementioned Harrogate Town and Stalybridge Celtic all visiting Keys Park in the next two weeks, no doubt looking to threaten The Pitmen’s 100 percent home league record.

There is, however, the small matter of AFC Telford United away on New Year’s Day and then an exciting trip to Leamington on Saturday 28th December, with memories of Hednesford’s bad tempered Play-Off Semi Final victory three seasons ago over The Brakes still adding an edge to any meeting between the two sides.

With spaces still available on the Travel Club’s coach to Gloucester and the option to pre-book a space for Telford, Leamington or Vauxhall Motors on Saturday 21st December any Hednesford supporters looking for some festive away day frolics with The Pitmen should contact Ken Leese on 07935 723290.
