Hednesford Boss Smith Relishes Christmas Period Despite Glover Exit …

Hednesford Town boss Rob Smith was in a typically bullish mood speaking ahead of four festive fixtures in a little over 10 days, stating that he relishes the busy Christmas period and is confident his squad will get over the disappointment of losing top scorer Danny Glover to Stockport yesterday.

The Pitmen face FA Cup heroes Worcester home and away alongside struggling Gloucester before travelling to Harrogate Town in the New Year and Smith is clear that his team will get their heads down and do all they can to get as many points as possible from the coming matches.

‘I always look at the positives whatever has been thrown at us and I will continue to do that. We are down on the amount of points I would have liked at this stage but not by an insurmountable amount, so although we are short of numbers we will go into the difficult schedule full of optimism.’

On Glover, Smith admitted his sadness at seeing a player who has scored nine goals for the club this campaign leave, but stressed he was under no illusions as to the state of play in the Vanarama Conference North.

‘It is obviously disappointing but the simple reality is that we cannot compete with the likes of Stockport. What they offered Danny was just too good to even try and compete with.

‘He is not leaving for football reasons in my opinion as I know he was enjoying his football and I do not believe that they are a better team than us, but players come and go, we will do our best to sign more players and we will just get on with it.

‘My focus is purely on the squad we have and doing all I can to get in re-enforcements. It is very difficult though, as there are few strikers available for the money we will pay, but we will do all we can.’

Smith believes the fixture versus Worcester will be a tough test against a side who are on a roll, currently having beaten Coventry City and also pushing League Two Scunthorpe United to an incredible penalty shootout in the FA Cup recently.

‘Worcester were tremendous in the cup and it will only affect them in a positive way. They are on a great unbeaten run and have an excellent squad. I am under no illusions how tough this is, especially given that Glover has gone and Sullivan is not fit, but I know we will have a good go against them.’

The loss of Glover has been added to by the news that Paul Sullivan is struggling with injury for the game on Friday, so the focus shifts to other strikers in the squad, most notably Steve Diggin and cult hero Marvin Robinson, to score the goals as the Pitmen face a run of fixtures that will have a huge say on where the team can go in 2015.

There is a good crowd expected for the Boxing Day fixture which kicks off at 3pm, the Travel Club will be running a bus down to Worcester and also up north to Harrogate on Sunday 4th January, any enquiries please contact Ken Leese on 07935 723290.
