Smith Looking Forward Not Back As Pitmen Replay Worcester …

Hednesford Town boss Rob Smith has said his players will be looking only forwards as The Pitmen travel to Aggborough tomorrow afternoon to face Worcester City for a second attempt at finishing a fixture that was called off in farcical circumstances on Boxing Day.

Hednesford had coasted into a 3-0 lead before the referee controversially abandoned the game due to a waterlogged pitch with just under 15 minutes to go.

Had the result stood The Pitmen would have been in the play-off places as it currently stands but Smith was keen to stress that the perceived injustice won’t be a means to encourage his players to win the game again.

‘What happened has happened and it has gone now. Our motivation is purely to build on our recent results which have been very encouraging.

‘The way this year has gone we are just happy to be able look upwards as opposed to downwards, we don’t feel any pressure at being near the play-offs.’

Hednesford have won three of the last four whereas their hosts have struggled since their FA Cup heroics took them to within a penalty shootout of the hallowed third round proper and, after The Pitmen’s midweek clash with West Bromwich Albion was postponed, injured players have had a further week to recuperate.

‘There was always going to be some sort of a hangover for Worcester after an unbelievable cup run but they will get back on track, I just hope it’s after this weekend!

‘From our point of view the game being off on Tuesday has helped because neither Darren Campion nor Chris Westwood would have played and Paul McCone was doubtful too. We will assess all three before the game tomorrow now.’

In other squad news to go with the extension of Mansfield youngster Jack Thomas’ loan period announced earlier this week, striker Paul Sullivan has joined Chasetown for a month in order to get some playing time.

With The Pitmen only separated from the top five on goal difference a victory tomorrow would give further credence to the theory that, with a management team and nucleus of players used to challenging for promotion at the sharp end of the season, Hednesford are real dark horses in this slow burn Vanarama Conference North season.
