Former Aston Villa Defender Arrives at Keys Park

Friday 03/06/2016

Hednesford Town are pleased to confirm that the latest new addition to Liam McDonald’s playing squad is defender Calum Flanagan.

The 24-year-old joins the Pitmen from Redditch United and is an experienced non-league defender, having played at both step one and two while he was also named Player and Players’ Player of the Year during his time with the Reds.

Following his arrival at Keys Park the defender, who can play at both centre-half and left-back, was looking forward to the new challenge. He said:

“To be honest Hednesford Town have always been a big club and one that has interested me when I have been looking at sides around the Midlands as they are always one that is on your radar.

“Having worked with the manager before it was a no brainer to sign here despite there being interest from a number of other clubs.

“I had a good football education with Aston Villa and I like to think that I read the game well and I’m very much a ball playing defender.

“I’ve played a number of games higher up the non-league game and I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Liam McDonald was delighted to be able to add the defender to his ever growing squad at Keys Park. He said:

“Callum joins us from Redditch United and he is the best defender that I have ever worked with – being very much a seven or eight out of ten marks player every week.

“Technically he was schooled well at Aston Villa before settling down with me and he played some great football over that time.

“I would say that he is one of the best defenders at step three level and is a good communicator as well as another leader on the pitch with him having played well over 200 first team games in non-league football now.

“He can play at both centre-back and left-back and is someone who performs every week and will be a big part of the back four.”
