Halesowen Town 1-3 Hednesford Town

Tuesday 30/08/2016

Hednesford Town returned to winning ways in the league as goals in each half saw them record a comprehensive victory over a Halesowen Town side that contained no less than five former Pitmen players.

In glorious late August sunshine the visitors started very much on the front foot with Gurjit Singh firing a chance just wide in the fourth minute.

It wouldn’t be long before Liam McDonald’s side would strike though as they opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a corner from the left-hand side picked out the unmarked George Carline who placed his header low into the bottom corner.

The Pitmen continued on the front foot and a minute later they almost doubled their lead but after shifting one way then the other, Ashley Sammons fired his low effort into the side netting.

After being totally outplayed by Hednesford in the opening exchanges, the hosts managed to create half an opening in the 12th minute but Lee Chilton fired high and wide from 20 yards.

Ten minutes later good football by McDonald’s side saw the ball fall to Sammons but his low effort went just wide of the upright.

As the half wore on the intensity slowed in the very hot conditions that the game was being played in and although the hosts were able to force two corners in quick succession, neither tested Hednesford goalkeeper Dan Crane before the break.

The Pitmen started the second half looking to build on their one goal lead, knowing that they had come unstuck with a similar scoreline just two days before.

A big chance came and went in the 64th minute for Carline to double his total and the Pitmen’s lead when Cohen Bramall did well down the left and his cross picked out the midfielder but he headed over at the far post.

Two minutes later an even better chance arrived, this time for Tom Thorley as he got on the end of Singh’s cross, but the Captain put his diving header over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Although the hosts offered little in terms of actual attempts on target they had upped their pressure on the Pitmen back line and as such it came as a relief when the visitors doubled their lead in the 74th minute.

A lovely flick on by substitute Danny Glover found Sammons and after advancing to just inside the box he fired in a low effort that was helped into the back of the net by Halesowen goalkeeper Daniel Platt.

The Pitmen increased the score two minutes later when Glover played the ball out to Simeon Maye and his return cross picked out the striker who was able to turn the ball home from near the penalty spot for his first goal of the season.

Hednesford didn’t let up in their quest for further goals with both Carline and Sean Geddes seeing efforts saved by Platt.

In fact it would be the hosts that would find the net next though when Kaiman Anderson bustled his way through the Hednesford back line before poking home past Crane with just three minutes remaining.

For the Pitmen, their attention now turn towards the FA Cup with Belper Town due to visit Keys Park on Saturday in the first qualifying round.
