Hednesford Town 1-2 Nantwich Town

Sunday 26/02/2017

Hednesford Town came up second best against a Nantwich Town who recorded their first ever victory at Keys Park.

In a lively start to the game the visitors almost edged ahead inside the opening 60 seconds, only for John Johnston to see his effort cleared off the line by Kyle Haynes.

But it was the Pitmen that would strike first though, when in the third minute  David McDermott picked up a loose ball in midfield before feeding Danny Glover who took it past one defender before firing home into the far corner.

Just 11 minutes later Nantwich were level when a simple ball down the middle of the field caught out the Hednesford backline and former Pitmen player Tom Peers took his time before firing past Dan Crane.

Peers had a great chance to double his tally a minute later as a cross into the box found him unmarked, but after taking too long to control the ball his effort was cleared away.

The Pitmen were finding the pace of Johnston and Joe Mwaslie troublesome as they forced a number of corners and free-kicks that were cleared away.

Hednesford had half a chance of their own in the 39th minute but Nat Brown volleyed wide from the edge of the box before Johnston put an effort well over the bar on the stroke of halftime.

HT: 1-1

The second period started with Nantwich very much on the front and they almost found their way through in the 51st minute as a corner ball fell to Mwaslie, but his fiercely struck effort was blocked before Matt Bell lifted an effort onto the Hednesford crossbar.

It came as no surprise when the visitors moved ahead in the 55th minute as Johnston again got the byline and his cross into the box was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Haynes.

Things could have got worse for Hednesford in the 72nd minute when Peers broke the offside trap and with just Crane to beat the big goalkeeper stood firm to deny the striker.

That looked as if it may have been crucial a minute later when Vinny Mukendi rose highest to meet a corner but it bounced down into the ground and over the bar.

In truth it was the visitors who looked more likely to add further goals to their tally as Crane had to twice deny Mwaslie in the space of a couple of minutes.

Although Mukendi floated another header over the bar late on the Pitmen failed to land a meaningful blow on the visitor’s goal in the final stages as they played out time to take home all three points.
