Hednesford Town 3-6 Burton Albion.

Hednesford Town exited the Birmingham Senior Cup at the first round stage after an entertaining evening of football at Keys Park. League One side Burton Albion sent a strong squad for the fixture, including all of the substitutes from Saturday’s game against MK Dons. The Pitmen made eight changes to the team that started in the weekend’s FA Cup triumph over Blyth Spartans.

The Pitmen were up against it from the start and struggled to deal with the pace and movement of the full time Brewers. Ben Bailey made a last ditch tackle to prevent Lloyd Dyer from scoring, however Brewers’ captain Jake Buxton headed home from the subsequent corner. Two minutes later a wonder strike from David Templeton doubled the visitors’ lead. While the Pitmen were struggling defensively, there were brighter moments going forward with debutant Andre Brown trying his luck with a turn and shot on the edge of the area just going over the crossbar.

Lloyd Dyer strolled through the Pitmen defence to make it three, before a ball played across the area set up Tom Hewlett for a tap in before the break.

HT 0-4

Joe Sbarra stole the ball off Bailey and unselfishly laid on another simple tap in for Hewlett in the 50th minute to extend the Brewers’ lead to five.

This sparked a Pitmen fight back when Burton ‘keeper Jack Livesey could only parry Brad Wells’ strike, allowing Tom Fry to slot home into an empty net. A double substitution saw Kris Scott and Kieran Wells enter the fray and when former Brewer Elliot Hodge finished a good team move with a clinical strike in the 63rd minute it looked like the home side might take something from the game.

Another great Templeton strike from outside the area effectively put the result beyond doubt, but there was still more for the Pitmen supporter’s to cheer about when Tom Fry scored directly from a corner in the 71st minute.
