Sutton Coldfield Town 1-5 Hednesford Town

Sunday 10/11/2019

Hednesford Town travelled to Coles Lane to face Sutton Coldfield Town in the Buildbase FA Trophy Second Round Qualifying. The Pitmen won away at league rivals Stratford Town in the previous round while The Royals created an upset defeating Northern Premier League Stafford Rangers to set up this encounter.

A one sided first half saw the Pitmen open the scoring in the seventh minute when Osebi Abadaki played the ball in from the left with Tom Elliott flicking it past Lewis Gwilliams. Reece Leek spurned a golden chance to equalise for the Royals dragging his shot wide when he found himself with a clear run at goal following a mix up in midfield from the visitors.

Ben Bailey played Elliot’s free kick back into the area for Reece King to set up Danny Glover to finish with a close range strike to double The Pitmen’s lead.

Leek’s looping shot from the right of the area went inches over the bar with Andy Wycherley beaten. A series of corners for the visitors continued to put the home goal under siege and when the ball came out to Bailey his thunderous low drive from 25 yards hit the back of the net. Joel Powney struck a free kick for the Royals from the left of the area forcing a great one handed save from Wycherley at the far post. Abadaki finding plenty of space on the left wing sent a low cross towards the far post, Glover’s step over deceived the defence with the ball rolling into the corner of the net.

HT 0-4

The Pitmen controlled the opening of the second half, keeping possession without adding to the score line. In the 68th minute Sutton received an unlikely lifeline when Bailey ran out of space in midfield, before playing a poor back pass, which was easily latched onto by substitute Reece Gibson who rounded Wycherley before gratefully firing home to reduce the defect.

The Royals were unable to gain further momentum as Hednesford continued to control the ball for long periods of the remaining game. Late on, Elliott bagged his second of the afternoon heading a cross from Elliot Hodge on the left past Gwilliams to complete the scoring and send The Pitmen into the next round.

After the game Pitmen manager Gary Hayward said; “I was pleased with the performance overall, we were excellent in the first half and Danny Glover did very well up top on his own, with Ossie back in the side we got round the sides of them and Sutton couldn’t deal with it. Second half was not as good, we gave away another sloppy goal, but the lessons were learnt from last week and we saw the game out and Tom Elliott finished the job off.”

The draw for the Buildbase Third Round Qualifying will take place on Monday 11th November, with the games taking place on Saturday 23rd November.
