The 1909/1910 Birmingham Combination Champions:
Back Row: Gough, Reaney Picken, Greenway, Mobberley and Corbett.
Front Row: Bristow, Jukes, Sheldon, Cumberlidge and Lloyd.

The Pitmen had largely competed in the Walsall District League from the late 1890’s but from looking at records it didn’t appear to be a prestigious league. The Pitmen were elected to the Birmingham Combination in 1908, and this is where “serious” football at the Cross Keys began.

In their first season in the Birmingham Combination, the Pitmen reached the fourth qualifying round of the F.A. Cup and finished in a mid table position.

The 1909/1910 season proved to be a special one for the Pitmen – the Birmingham Combination title was sealed with 51 points from 30 games, three points ahead of Cradley St. Lukes.
