Southern League Championship Trophy 95

Hednesford Town 1-0 York City

Southern League Championship Trophy – Saturday 12th August 1995 – Hastings

On yet another boiling hot day, Hednesford travelled the 200 plus miles to Hastings for the Beazer league version of the Charity Shield, and they came away with their first piece of silverware for this season.

To say the score line flattered the Pitmen is an understatement with Hednesford keeper Scott Cooksey pulling off at least three fine saves which had the Hasting’s forwards shaking their heads in amazement of how he saved them/

Hednesford, still to be sponsored by Bridgetown Doors, started the brighter after eight minutes a Kevin Collins cross should have been easily collected by Creed the Hastings keeper, but he was watching the oncoming O’Connor and he dropped the ball but O’Connor’s reaction was not quick enough and the ball was cleared. In the 14th minute Devine found O’Connor who shot narrowly wide, a minute later the home side almost took the lead Hednesford back four were caught napping as Playford ran past them Cooksey ran past them and had to receive treatment as the forward followed in.

On 30 minutes Hednesford took the lead with a super goal. Hanson received the ball 30 yards out and looked and hammered an unstoppable shot which hit the near post and ran across the line into the net. Cooksey save the Pitmen deep into injury time when from a corner Terry Meaden was flicked over the bar.

In the 51st minute Playford hit a shot which saw Cooksey make a fine save. Two minutes later Playford was there again as his header was pushed out by Cooksey. In the 58th minute Fitzpatrick chased a ball that looked as if it was going out for a throw, stepped on the line and pushed a ball through to O’Connor who shot under Creed to make it 2-0.

Hednesford sub Steve Burr had a shot saved by Creed in the 78th minute. A throw to O’Connor after another save by the keeper saw him race down the right to lay the ball to Devine to score Hednesford’s third goal, then with only two minutes to go Wright beat the offside trap and ball beyond Creed to complete the scoring and the battle was won.

Hednesford man of the match Scott Cooksey with entertainment value 7/10.

Hednesford play their first match in the Vauxhall Conference on Saturday when they play Halifax Town at Keys Park.
