Sammons Arrives at Keys Park

Saturday 21/05/2016

Hednesford Town are pleased to confirm that the latest player to join Liam McDonald at Keys Park is attacking midfielder Ashley Sammons after he signed a one year contract.

The 24-year-old former Birmingham City youngster arrives from Redditch United – with whom he enjoyed a hugely successful last three seasons having scored over 20 goals in those campaigns – and will also take up the role of vice-captain.

Having started his career with Birmingham, Sammons went on to play for Hereford United and Worcester City before linking up with Redditch in 2013.

Although he left to join Corby Town 12 months ago, where he scored eight times and picked up ‘Player of the Month’ for August in the National League North, Sammons returned to United in the Autumn to help the team reach the play-offs at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Following his arrival at Keys Park Sammons said:

“I’m really happy to have signed for Hednesford Town and excited about the new challenge that lies ahead.

“I’ve been in the Southern Premier League for three seasons now and I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Northern Premier League and also working with Liam McDonald who gets the best out of me as a player.

“For me Hednesford are a big club, having spent the last three seasons in the National League North. It is a big pitch here and that is something that will suit me.

“I have scored over 20 goals in the last three seasons, including eight for Corby in the league above, and I’m always around the edge of the box looking for chances to score while I also like taking set pieces and creating goals – something I am hoping to do again next season.”

Manager Liam McDonald was delighted to be able to bring in the highly rated player after fighting off competition from a number of clubs higher up the pyramid.
He said:

“Ashley is a very good player who is also really creative when on the ball. For the past two seasons I believe that he has been the best attacking midfielder at step three.

“He had a good upbringing at Birmingham City and he will be a really big player for us this season. After scoring a lot of goals in the last two seasons I will be setting him a target of 15 plus goals again this season.

“Ashley was also my captain while at Redditch and he will make an excellent vice-captain. With him and Tom (Thorley), they are both lads who can lead by example on the pitch.

“This signing is a big plus for us, there was a lot of interest from higher up the leagues due to the amount of goals that he scores and I look forward to having him in the side.”

More new signings will be announced by the club at the start of next week.
