Match Preview: Chasetown (a)

Sunday 08/04/2012

Hednesford Town make the short journey through Heath Hayes and into Burntwood as they face up to Chris Brindley’s Chasetown team in a huge local derby on Easter Monday which could have major implications for both teams’ respective seasons.

The Pitmen threw away a two goal lead against Kendal on Saturday to pass up an opportunity to draw level on points with FC Untied who occupy the final play-off place after the Mancunians surpisingly lost away to Buxton.

Chasetown meanwhile, have won only once in the sixteen matches since their surprise victory at Keys Park over a Pitmen side who were flying at the time and harboured realistic hopes of mounting a title challenge on Boxing Day.

Since that loss Rob Smith’s side have won only four in fifteen to fall away from the summit of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division and are now left hoping FC United drop points in two of their last four matches, providing Hednesford win all four of their remaining fixtures, to sneak into the play-offs.

‘Brinner’, of course land lord of the Cross Keys pub in Hednesford, will be hoping his Chasetown team with numerous former Pitmen among their ranks including Mark Branch, Richard Teesdale and the on loan Danny Quinn pick up a vital win as the Burntwood outfit are just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

The Pitmen will be without the suspended Mark Beesley again and there will be question marks over Gary Hay, who missed Saturday’s Kendal game, and also Jermaine Johnson whose groin injury and subsequent substitution unsettled the defence at Keys Park yesterday.

FC United are now, barring a major capitulation by Chorley or Bradford Park Avenue, the only team Hednesford can realistically catch to grab a play-off place and they travel to Ashton United for a local derby on Monday.

All Hednesford can do is vanquish their local rivals, gain revenge for the Boxing Day defeat and hope FC United crack under the pressure over the coming weeks.
