Squad Keen For Return To Action After Postponement

Thursday 14/02/2013

Hednesford Town boss Rob Smith has spoken of the desire within his current squad of players to return to Evo-Stik League action this weekend following the postponement of The Pitmen’s clash with AFC Fylde due to yet more inclement weather in midweek.

A blanket of snow covered the Keys Park pitch for a third time in almost as many weeks on Tuesday afternoon causing the Fylde personnel to be told not to travel to the Midlands for the second time since the original date of the game and Smith admitted some of his players voiced their frustration at being unable to play following last week’s 2-2 draw with Ashton United.

‘I know the players were keen to get back out on the pitch and get going again and I had a few of them on to me showing how disappointed they were but we will just get on with it. The pitch was unplayable so there was nothing we could do.’

The Pitmen fell six points behind league-leaders North Ferriby last Saturday and the Fylde fixture was one of their two games in hand but Smith is confident his team can cope with any potential fixture pile up and is fully aware his team are in a title fight.

‘I’m not too worried regarding our fixture list, we have the squad to cope with two games a week until the end of the season and the players know we are in a title race and that, as long we stay in the leading pack, anything can happen.’

The Pitmen faithful, so used to play-off and promotion dreams at this time of the year over the past three seasons, are as qualified as any set of supporters to know that staying in the mix is incredibly important; a win on Saturday at Keys Park will go some way to ensuring those dreams stay alive.
