Match Preview: Romulus (A)

The Pitmen make the short trip to Sutton Coldfield on Sunday afternoon as odds-on favourites in the final qualifying round of the FA Trophy before the big-guns of the Conference enter the draw.

Romulus FC, currently struggling in 18th place in the Evo-Stik Northern League First Division South, are the hurdle which stands in front of an in-form Pitmen side looking for their sixth straight win and a first appearance in the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy since 2009.

Pitmen boss, Rob Smith, aware that his team are on a real high at present, is keen to guard against complacency ahead of the game and will ensure his team prepare well.

‘The players have a swagger about them at the moment but we are fully aware that we cannot get carried away at all. Things can change in football very quickly.

The game is a cup match, away from home on an artificial surface. Romulus are a good team and will be really up for the game. We are well aware of how difficult it will be and will prepare properly.’

Elliott Durrell will be missing due to suspension on Sunday and Sean O’Connor is struggling with the flu but Smith is confident his squad can deal with any omissions and concentrate on a victory.

‘Suspensions and injuries allow others an opportunity and I don’t expect it to affect the team. We are looking to get through a very difficult tie, if we do then we can look further ahead but we are concentrating purely on Sunday.’

While The Pitmen are playing on Sunday there are a number of big games in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division that supporters will be keeping a close eye on taking place on Saturday, namely pace-setters North Ferriby United welcoming fourth placed Marine and Ashton United, currently in third and two points behind The Pitmen, facing fifth placed Chorley.

Hednesford will be hoping that results in those two matches have a positive effect on their league position while they navigate a potential ‘banana skin’ cup tie to continue their progress in the FA Trophy.
