Hednesford Town 1–2 Blyth Spartans

Sunday 16/10/2016

Hednesford Town missed out on the chance to further consolidate their place in the top five as they came unstuck against a Blyth Spartans side that leapfrogged them in the table.

Despite the Pitmen controlling possession in the opening few minutes, it was the away side that settled into the game more quickly with Luke Armstrong seeing a shot tipped over by Dan Crane in the ninth minute.

Tristian Dunkley then saw a shot blocked for the home side before Matty Pattison fired an effort just wide from the edge of the box for Spartans after bustling through a couple of challenges.

The visitors almost capitalised on a mistake from the home side in the 35th minute when a ball bounced up and over Dan Crane, just when it looked as if Armstrong would fire into an unguarded net Crane made a smart block before the ball was cleared.

Back came the home side and two minutes later George Carline cut inside before seeing his shot blocked. The midfielder was soon in action again as his header down picked out Danny Glover but his effort was also blocked.

Five minutes before the break the visitors came close again when a free kick from Pattison went narrowly wide of the upright.

HT: 0-0

The Pitmen started the second period on the front foot and almost went ahead following good interplay when the ball found its way to Cohen Bramall, but his drilled effort was missed by everyone and went behind to safety.

Carline then saw another chance come and go as he headed over the bar before Robbie Dale fired in an effort for Blyth from 20 yards that was turned behind by Crane.

After seeing another shot blocked behind for a corner Blyth did eventually take the lead in the 67th minute. Sean Reid was allowed time to turn and move forward before firing a low effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

The Pitmen were level 11 minutes later though when Gurjit Singh beat one man before firing in a shot from 20 yards that took a slight deflection as it found its way into the back of the net.

Hednesford now sensed as if the game was there for taking however it would be the away side that would take all three points thanks to a goal in the 81st minute.

A ball over the top was initially dealt with by the Hednesford defence but as Calaum Flanagan went to clear the ball it rebounded off Armstrong and into the net.

Despite forcing a couple of corners the Pitmen only tested the visiting goalkeeper once more when Singh fired in a low shot that was turned away to end any hopes of a late comeback.
