Hednesford Town 2-0 Matlock Town

Wednesday 04/10/2017

Hednesford Town were able to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season after two second half goals from Ed Mbunga saw off Matlock Town.

After an even start to the game the first chance fell to the Pitmen in the 12th minute when Ben Bailey played a ball into the area but Reece King and Danny Glover got in each other’s way with the former putting his effort wide.

The visitors started to come more into the game but only had long range attempts from Luis Rose and Adam Etches to show for their efforts.

They should have taken the lead in the 25th minute though when a ball across the Pitmen backline picked out Edward Cribley but he managed to chest his effort wide from five yards with the goal gaping.

Mbunga saw an effort saved in the 35th minute then a good clearance two minutes before halftime from Sam Oji denied Matlock a chance to attack the Pitmen goal.

HT: 0-0

Hednesford started the second half on the front foot and took the lead in the 51st minute. A long throw from Bailey was flicked on by Glover to Mbunga who took the ball past one defender before firing high into the net for his first goal in Pitmen colours.

It should really have been two in the 58th minute as Glover did brilliantly down the left and picked out James Lawrie but his effort was cleared off the line.

Four minutes later Lawrie played a great ball into the Matlock penalty area and Mbunga rose but cleared the ball with the goal at his mercy.

He would have to wait just a matter of minutes for his second goal though as it arrived in the 68th minute. A corner from the right picked out Jim Mutton and his effort was scrambled home by Mbunga.

Matlock were almost back in it in the 77th minute when Tyrell Waite broke forward but his great curling effort hit the post after beating James Wren.

The Pitmen goalkeeper was called into action again two minutes from time as he kept out a Michael Williams effort.

In the end though the two goals from Mbunga were enough as the Pitmen look to make it three victories in a week when Witton Albion visit Keys Park on Saturday.
