Melton Town v Hednesford Town

Hednesford Town take a couple of weeks break from Northern Premier League West football with their next scheduled league game being away at Mossley on Tuesday 10 th September. During this time The Pitmen will be in both FA Trophy and FA Cup action starting on Saturday 31 st August when they visit Melton Town where they will hope to move beyond the first qualifying round for the first time since 2020/21.

Formed in 2014 Melton Town play in the Premier Division of the Uhlsport United Counties League, their second season at step 5. In 2023/4 they finished fourth, losing 0-1 to Loughborough Students in the play-off semi-finals. This season they lie in sixth place in the table having won three and drawn two of their five games leaving them seven points behind league leaders Eastwood CFC who have played two games more. At home Melton have beaten Harrowby United 6-4 and drawn 1-1 with Ashby Ivanhoe who knocked our neighbours Chasetown out of the FA Cup in the preliminary round. Away they have drawn 2-2 at Belper United and have beaten Gresley Rovers 5-1 and Newark & Sherwood United 3-1. As well as beating Harrowby United 2-0 and Goole 3-2 in the FA Cup they also made progress in the FA Vase last weekend with a 4-0 win at Ingles. Leading scorer is Kairo Edwards-John who is in his second spell with the club. The former Leicester City youngster who has also played in Iceland has scored eight times this season five in the league and three in the FA Cup and
Vase. Just behind him on five goals each are Ryan Calver and Keenan Rakwane-King. Former Pitman Spencer Weir-Daley who made four starts for us in 2016/17 scoring once has also played for Melton Town, making five appearances in 2021/22. Manager Steve King said, “We’ve had Melton watched, they’ll want to beat us, so it’ll be another tough game, but we’ll prepare this week and be ready”.

Melton Town play at Sign Right Park, Melton Sports Village, Burton Road, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire LE13 1DR. The Sports Village includes rugby and hockey pitches as well as the football ground which is at the far end of the complex and has an artificial pitch. The bar opens at noon and serves hot food, Stilton cheeses and local pork pies along with local craft beers and fine wines.

Admission on Saturday will be £9 adults, £7 concessions and £5 under 13s with kick off at 3pm.
