Hednesford Town cruised into the Semi Final of the Staffordshire Senior Cup with a straightforward 3-0 victory against their local rivals Stafford Rangers at Keys Park on a wet and windy Tuesday evening.
The away side had started the brighter, albeit both teams looked sluggish after their enforced two week break due to the weather, but once Luke George was shown red for a ridiculously dangerous tackle on Darren Campion after 22 minutes there was only going to be one winner.
Stafford were dogged in midfield and snapped at the ankles of The Pitmen throughout the opening period but former Hednesford striker Danny Quinn was kept quiet by the Town back line before Sean O’Connor took advantage of some hesitant Stafford defending after Michael Lennon’s shot had been superbly saved by Adam Alcock to open the scoring on 50 minutes.
The Pitmen made sure of the result with two further goals inside the last 20 minutes as the ten-man Rangers toiled in the driving rain.
First Alex Melbourne cut inside and set up Durrell to hit an unstoppable shot into the far corner via a slight deflection, his 22nd goal of a prolific season, on 70 minutes before Lennon finished the job with two minutes to go.
The game served as a useful warm-up for Hednesford’s vital league fixture against Nantwich Town on Saturday as The Pitmen continue their quest for the league title with leaders North Ferriby United just four points in front.
