Match Preview: AFC Telford United (H)

Tuesday 24/12/2013

Hednesford Town and AFC Telford United renew their fierce rivalry again in a festive cracker of a Skrill North match with thousands expected to descend on Keys Park for the now traditional Boxing Day local derby.

Chasetown and Stafford Rangers have historically been the opposition for The Pitmen but, since their superb promotion last season and the struggles of both their nearest rivals, Telford have emerged as Hednesford’s fiercest local foil and, as the atmosphere at the New Bucks Head showed in the FA Cup earlier this season, there will undoubtedly be a very competitive edge to the game.

That FA Cup meeting earlier in the season piled pressure onto current Telford boss, Liam Watson, but since then The Bucks have made a concerted push into the promotion mix, underlining their credentials in the strongest possible way after a 2-1 victory against Brackley Town last Saturday.

The Pitmen, despite a recent wobble, have garnered seven points form a possible nine after the weight of expectation around the Club threatened to derail their superb start to the season, and will eat, drink and be merry while sitting at the top of the Skrill North.

Only two points separate the teams in first and third place and the Boxing Day fixture, in the league at least, is without doubt the biggest for The Pitmen since their glory years in the Vauxhall Conference over a decade ago and, with a crowd of around 2000 expected and a healthy away following from Shropshire this game really has all the makings of a festive classic.
