Hednesford Town 1-1 Marine AFC

Tuesday 23/08/2016

Hednesford Town were forced to come from behind for the third time already this season as they picked up a point against an unbeaten Marine side – with the Pitmen also being reduced to ten men for the second game in succession.

The game was forced to kick-off ten minutes late due to the visitors being delayed en-route but this didn’t stop the Pitmen starting on the front foot as they worked an opening for Sean Geddes only for him to fire high and wide.

Six minutes later Craig Lindfield should really have opened the scoring for Marine but he scuffed his shot wide when well placed in front of goal and with only two Pitmen defenders to beat on the line.

After a period of play during which both sides pushed forward into the opposing areas, it was Hednesford who saw a chance come and go in the 28th minute as Jamie Matthews set up George Carline but his shot was blocked from 12 yards.

Two minutes later Hednesford goalkeeper Dan Crane made a smart save from Lindfield before the Marine striker should have put his side in front with a free header from six yards out in the 35th minute.

Just three minutes into the second period the visitors went ahead when Joe Mwasile raced onto a long goal kick and rounded Crane before firing home.

Back came the Pitmen and after Ashley Sammons had curled an effort just wide of the post and Geddes saw another chance come and go the home side equalised in the 73rd minute. Skipper Tom Thorley produced a wonderful left footed strike that beat the goalkeeper at the near post to bring his team level.

The home side were now well on top and they should have scored a second in the 84th minute when Joel Logan set up Rhys Thompson but he fired wide with the goal at his mercy.

For the second game in succession though Hednesford had to see out a game with ten men as striker Tristian Dunkley was sent off for two bookings, the second of which came in the 86th minute to end any hopes of a grand finale for the home side.

The Pitmen host Whitby Town on Saturday at Keys Park as they look to get back to winning ways in the league ahead of a Bank Holiday weekend double header of fixtures.
