Romulus 0-1 Hednesford Town

Sunday 16/07/2017

Hednesford Town made it two pre-season wins in succession following a second half goal from Lee Smith which proved enough to defeat Romulus.

The Pitmen were without Matt Dodd and Lewis Wright for the fixture but did welcome Alex Melbourne back after he had missed the two opening fixtures of pre-season.

Town had a half chance to take the lead after just 20 seconds when the ball was played forward to Luke Rodgers but he couldn’t control it as he looked to round the goalkeeper.

Although Romulus forced a corner soon after they offered little more in the first half and Hednesford perhaps should have been ahead when Rodgers fired wide in the 19th minute when well placed.

In the 30th minute Kris Taylor picked out Danny Glover but the striker placed his first time effort wide of the upright.

HT: 0-0

Following three substitutions at half-time Hednesford were still setting up in the second half as Romulus had a half chance but Jose Veiga comfortably saved a long-range effort.

The lively James Lawrie saw two shots saved before the Pitmen took the lead in the 54th minute after Rodgers did well to pick out Smith who fired his shot high into the net.

Another flurry of substitutes soon followed for Hednesford with Ryan Wynter seeing a header saved just a minute after coming on.

The home side were restricted to long range efforts in the remaining minutes and Hednesford saw the game out to record their first clean sheet of pre-season.
