Hednesford Town1–1 Lancaster City

Sunday 27/08/2017

Hednesford Town made it three games unbeaten at home after coming from behind to earn a point for the second time this season.

After an even start to the game the Pitmen perhaps should have taken the lead in the 12th minute when defender Sam Oji rose highest at a corner but he planted his free header wide of the goal.

This would be the first of a succession of corners for the home side, meanwhile Lancaster wasted a half chance in the 23rd minute when the ball fell nicely to Benjamin Hudson but he blasted his effort well over the crossbar.

Five minutes later a similar fate would greet Hednesford’s Jordan Nadat who fired high over the goal after good work by Joe Ballinger following a smart break into the City penalty area.

In the 38th minute James Wren made a comfortable save from Lancaster’s Ryan Winder before Simon Wills looped a header onto the roof of the Pitmen net four minutes later.

Right on the stroke of halftime Oji was again in the thick of the action as his towering header from 12 yards was palmed away by Joshua Powell in the Lancaster goal before Luke Rodgers fired his effort over the crossbar.

HT: 0-0

The Pitmen’s Devarn Green saw a fierce low shot blocked away in the 53rd minute before Wren was called into action four minutes later when Winder fired in a free-kick from the edge of the box which the goalkeeper tipped onto the crossbar.

Wren was forced into another smart low save two minutes later before the visitors finally struck first in the 61st minute. A whipped in corner saw a headed effort strike the crossbar with Glenn Steel being able to stoop to head home from inside the six-yard box.

The Pitmen would be behind for just six minutes though when Danny Glover fired the ball into an unguarded net after a miss-hit Rodgers effort found its way to the striker following good work by Matt Dodd.

Six minutes later a ball over the top almost saw Hednesford take the lead as first Rodgers was denied before Glover saw his looping header cleared off the line and a follow-up shot blocked for a corner. From the resultant set-piece Ballinger headed his effort wide.

Tom Thorley fired an effort wide of the Lancaster goal in the 77th minute before the away side started to come back more into the contest.

Lancaster almost headed home with all three points only for a Winder header to strike the angle of post and crossbar in the second minute of stoppage time.
