Bromsgrove Sporting 2-1 Hednesford Town

Wednesday 29/09/2021

The Pitmen suffered a further set back in their so far promising league campaign in a fast paced and open encounter at the Victoria Ground. A frenetic first half saw end-to-end action with neither side carving out an opening goal. The Pitmen went close with a cross from the left flashing past the face of the goal with Andre Brown, Andre Landell and Chay Tilt all in advanced positions needing only the slightest of touches to put the ball into the net. The Rouslers were making good progress down the right with the impressive Vladimiro Pais and Josh Dugmore combining frequently to create problems for the visitors. Jourdain Masidi should have perhaps done better with a free header in the hosts best chance of the half. Shortly before the break leading goal scorer Andre Landell forced an excellent low save from Akos Onodi following a strong run down the right from Callam Mendez-Jones.

HT 0-0

The second half was eight minutes old when Lewis Ison dived into a tackle in the area, the challenge was deemed a foul and Cameron Ebbut fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net to break the deadlock. Following the goal Reece Flanagan replaced Joshveer Shergill, and it was his solo effort that levelled the score in the 75th minute. Four minutes later the game was decided when Bromsgrove delivered a long free kick into the area, allowing Joel Kettle to head home at the far post.  A spirited fight back from the Pitmen did not deliver the equaliser which on balance of play would have been deserved. The two sides will meet again next week in the League Cup.

Assistant manager Graham Deakin commented after the game; “It was too open and expansive to begin with and we looked the better side when we slowed it down. I can’t argue with the penalty, Ison has been great all season but if you dive into a challenge in the area you give the referee a decision to make. Flanagan came on, we got the goal and then gave them a free header minutes later. Seasons hinge on moments like this and we need to be better in both boxes.”
