Pitmen Fans Asked To Vote On NPL Top 100

Wednesday 13/12/2017

Hednesford Town supporters are being reminded that they have just over a week to choose the EVO-STIK League’s star team and top one hundred players of all time to celebrate the competition’s milestone fiftieth anniversary season.

The online public poll to name the Northern Premier League’s ‘Top 100 Players’ and ‘Team of all Time’ of the last five decades opened on November 7 and will run until Friday 22 December.

The final line-ups of legends chosen by fans, players and officials will then feature in a specially commissioned book charting the Northern Premier League’s proud history since its foundation in 1968. Entitled ’50 Glorious Seasons – A History of the Northern Premier League 1968-2018′, the book is being written by official historian and statistician Dominic McKenzie and will be out within weeks of the anniversary campaign ending.

Nearly 2,000 players were nominated, including a number of current and former Pitmen, over the last month by clubs and individual fans before a special panel of judges made up of fans whittled down the extensive list covering every decade and playing position down to a shortlist of 200 going forward to the final vote.

EVO-STIK League social media manager James Heyes urged clubs and fans to get voting in time for Christmas after being spoilt for choice by the flood of nominations that came in from current and former NPL clubs including Accrington Stanley, Burton Albion, Chorley, Chester, Fleetwood Town, Macclesfield Town, Morecambe and Wigan Athletic.

He said:

“Three weeks ago we asked for you to nominate who you think are the greatest players of the last 50 years and we had close to 2,000 nominations for 768 players. The shortlisting committee have now made the arduously difficult choice looking at every player’s achievements, playing records, impact on the game and overall greatness of the players involved.

“This was not an easy choice to pick the 25 percent to be put forward on a shortlist and several times we took players in and out literally up to the final minute of selection. We have had so many trophy winners, England cap holders and managers nominated. We’ve had record holders at club and league level picked and every winner of the EVO-STIK League’s Supporters Player of the Season was nominated.

“In the club submissions, many selected players from other clubs as well as their own. In fact, some even told us that their players would not be worthy of a spot in the Top 100 due to the overall quality of those put forward. so please do not be offended if the players you selected did not make this list as we did not expect this level of quality nor quantity of nominations to be made. Before it began we were worried about even getting ten goalkeepers picked and in the end over 80 were nominated.”
