Match Report; Hednesford Town 5-1 Bromsgrove Sporting

Wednesday 28/10/2020

The Pitmen returned to the PRG Stadium at Keys Park after two games on the road to face Bromsgrove Sporting in the Pitching In Southern Premier Central League. Prior to kick off Hednesford Town sat in 20th place, four points and four places behind their opponents.
The game started brightly with the home side surging forward into the Bromsgrove box in the opening minutes of the game. Reece Flanagan provided a worthy cross, but his service fell too short for Anthony Dwyer to convert. Chances continued to come for the Pitmen with Dan Turner cutting in from the left, but his effort was comfortably saved by Daniel Platt in goal for the visitors.
Bromsgrove seemed up for the challenge and effectively pressed the home side in the opening exchanges. This proved lethal in the 25th minute when Callam Mendez-Jones’ tackle was misjudged to have been inside the box resulting in the referee pointing to the spot. Michael Taylor stepped up to face Andy Wycherley who saved the low shot with his feet keeping the score line even and the home fans happy.
However, Wycherley’s keeping wasn’t as well received in the 32nd minute when his error saw Courtney Richards shoot from the edge of the box putting the away side 1-0 up.
The Pitmen tried to bounce back with an effort from Louis Dodds, but he narrowly missed the net. However, it wasn’t long until Dodds saw his name on the score sheet when in added time at the end of the half his effort fired past the keeper after a scramble in the box.
HT 1-1
The second half saw the Pitmen burst into action with Mendez-Jones and Flanagan being key defensively and seeing off an early Bromsgrove threat. Things only got better for Hednesford in the 51st minute when Dan Turner slotted the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1 to the home side.
Bromsgrove tried to press and attack but the 67th minute saw the Pitmen’s advantage increase. Dodds scored his second of the night with his curling shot beating Platt after some enterprising play from Mendez-Jones on the right.
The home side found themselves with a penalty in quick succession of Dodds’ goal after Dwyer was brought down in the box. The fouled number nine stepped up to the spot but failed to send his team 4-1 up after his low driven shot was saved by Platt.
Bromsgrove tirelessly defended but cracks arose again in the 80th minute as a rapid Hallahan corner was effortlessly converted by Kyle Rowley on his home debut for the Pitmen’s fourth of the night.
Within six minutes the homeside’s confidence proved lethal for the Rouslers as skipper Ben Bailey’s bullet header from a corner provided a fifth for Hednesford Town and sealed a home victory for the Pitmen just before the final whistle.
