Hednesford Town 4-0 Leiston

Monday 06/12/2021

Leiston were the visitors to Keys Park at the weekend for the latest installment of the Pitching-In Southern Premier League Central. Before the game the Blues sat just outside of the playoff places, with Hednesford trailing seven points behind in tenth place. Both sides needed to get back to winning ways after both suffering 4-1 defeats last time out.

The Pitmen came flying out of the blocks with a ball out of defence sending Riley O’Sullivan straight through on goal, a last ditch attempt to halt his run resulted in a penalty scored by Courtney Richards in the 2nd minute.  Both sides agreed to stop the game in the 6th minute for applause in the memory and to show love to Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

Oliver Basey made an outstanding save from a Leiston corner, which prompted two minutes of play that effectively decided the game. George Cater refused to give up on a ball that seemed to be going out for a Leiston goal kick, winning a corner for the Pitmen, which Josh Endall headed home to extend the lead. Two minutes later, Carter Lycett whipped in a freekick from the right, Endall timed his run superbly getting in front of the defence to slot the ball home.
HT 3-0
Hednesford came out for the second half with determination to manage the game, Todd Parker and Cater both sent shots narrowly wide. Leiston continued to chip away in the second half, testing the home defence and forcing a couple of good saves out of the highly impressive Basey. A complete performance from the Pitmen, with precision attacking and robust defending, was topped off when Parker scored with a low, deflected  shot with the final kick of the game.

After the game Keenen Meakin-Richards commented; “It was the first time in a while we have taken the lead, and it was good to win the penalty early on. Oli Basey made a tremendous save after that and we were able to go for the kill with Josh’s goals. It was a great performance today and I was pleased with all aspects of our play, we took our chances when they came and defended solidly when we had to”.
