Stourbridge 3-1 Hednesford Town

Sunday 27/11/2022

The Pitmen faced Stourbridge for the third time this season, this time at the War Memorial Stadium. The two previous meetings at Keys Park resulted in a 0-0 draw in the league and a 4-2 win for the Pitmen in the FA Trophy.

The Pitmen got off to a flying start with Stanley Anaebonam latching onto a long diagonal ball, still with some running to do, the Norwegian forward bore down on goal sliding a low angled shot past Charlie Price. A shaky second fifteen minutes from Hednesford saw Jason Cowley equalise after 16 minutes for the Glassboys with a driven shot from inside the penalty area. The Pitmen eventually rallied after the goal and were back in the game, however Stourbridge would have the best opportunities to take the lead from the penalty spot when Levi Andoh made a needless tackle in the area. Hednesford keeper Tiernan Brooks made his second penalty save in four days from Cowley with a diving save to his right, Glassboys’ skipper Reece King lashed the rebound well wide. Reece Styche missed a near open goal after a dangerous left sided cross from Cowley meant that the half ended with a goal each.

HT 1-1

Leroy Lita headed over from Andoh’s cross early on in the second half. Styche got his goal with a classy, looping finish from Tyler Lyttle’s cross into the top corner to give the home side the lead for the first time in the game just before the hour mark. Lewis Ison pinged a low shot just wide of Price’s near post as the Pitmen fought to find an equaliser. The match was effectively decided by a piece of appalling luck when a ball was whipped into the Pitmen area and Keith Lowe’s attempted clearance sliced off his shin into the back of the net.

The evening ended on a sour note when substitute Joe Cuff was dismissed for the second time this season, in what would turn out to be his last contribution in a Pitmen shirt, for recklessly late and high challenge on King in the dying moments of the game.
