Thursday 07/03/2024

It’s Friday night football at Keys Park on Friday 8th March when Hednesford entertain Coventry City in the fourth round of the Birmingham Senior Cup. To get to this stage of the competition Hednesford have seen off National League North leaders Tamworth on penalties when the second-round tie had finished 2-2 after 90 minutes followed by a 3-0 win over Romulus in the third round. Coventry also needed penalties to beat Midland League Studley before despatching Coleshill Town in the last round. After the first game had been abandoned due to floodlight failure with the Sky Blues 3-1 in front, they finished the job in the rescheduled fixture, winning 3-0 with goals from Marco Rus (penalty), Evan Eghosa Alsowieren and Charlie Burden. Already through to the semi-finals are Racing Club Warwick who beat Darlaston 2-0, Leamington who were awarded a walkover following
the demise of Nuneaton along Aston Villa who beat Lye on Wednesday.

Coventry City have generally played their U21 side in this season’s Birmingham Senior Cup competition. The squad play their football in the Professional Development League (North Division) and are currently in seventh place in a league of 11 teams with 21 points from 19 games.

Aston Villa have won the Birmingham Senior Cup on 19 occasions, six more than their Second City rivals Birmingham City. Hednesford and Coventry have both won it three times. Coventry beating Stourbridge 1-0 in 1910/11, Bilston United 2-1 in 1922/23 and Walsall 3-2 in 2006/07 while Hednesford’s victories came against Burton Town in 1936/36 (2-1), Stourbridge in 2008/09 (2-0) and Sutton Coldfield in 2012/13 (4-1).
Hednesford will have almost all of their squad available for the game barring Lucas Yeomans who is still recuperating after surgery.

Kick off at Keys Park will be at 7.45pm with the usual reduced County Cup admission prices: £5 adults, £4 concessions, £1 U16s with car parking £1.
