Hednesford Town 2-3 West Bromwich Albion

Wednesday 21/12/2011

Hednesford Town did their supporters proud, locking horns with a young, fit and very quick West Bromwich Albion side in the Birmingham Senior Cup Quarter Final, taking the lead in a superb first half perfromance and equalising at 2-2 before conceding a last minute winner.

Chris Clements was his old creative self in midfield and Kyle Haynes marauded at right-back to give The Pitmen real attacking impetus.
The home side deservedly took the lead on twenty-nine minutes as a swift move saw Jamey Osborne’s pass deflected into the path of Andre Landell whose shot was palmed into the path of Marvin Robinson.
Ben Bailey hit the post, had a rebound blocked and almost scored from inside his own half as Hednesford pushed for a decisive second.

West Brom improved markedly after the break and for fifteen minutes the home side struggled to contain the pace of the front three as Adil Nabi’s outstanding half volley equalised before, on fifty-five minutes, Nabi again finished well.

The Pitmen weathered the considerable storm and equalised when Haynes’ forray and superb cross down the right was headed into his own net, under pressure from Mark Danks, by Cameron Gayle on seventy-four minutes.
Bailey saw a close range header bundled off the line before hesitancy in Hednesford’s defence allowed Kemar Roofe an easy finish in the final minute.

An impressive crowd of five-hundred-and-thirty-two may have seen some Albion stars of the future but will certainly not forget the performance of The Pitmen, as they now look forward to their local derby on Boxing Day versus Chasetown at Keys Park with their heads held very high.
