Match Preview: Ilkeston FC (H)

Tuesday 27/11/2012

Hednesford Town return to league action on Tuesday night following their elimination from the FA Trophy by Solihull Moors on Saturday, fully aware that all concentration can now be placed on chasing down North Ferriby United’s nine point lead at the top of the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

The Villagers, undefeated for 17 league games, are taking the league by storm but, should The Pitmen win tomorrow night, the gap would stand at six points with Ferriby having played two more games and the two teams clash on Saturday in what is a huge game for Rob Smith’s side.

A resurgent Ilkeston FC are the visitors to Keys Park who, despite a poor start to the season, have shown form in the last week with victories over Whitby Town and fellow promotion hopefuls Ashton United.

The Pitmen lost their last meeting with Ilkeston at Keys Park 1-0 in February 2009 but Hednesford supporters will remember with fondness their away victory in the same season when Tyrone Barnett rose like the proverbial salmon to head a last gasp winner in October 2008.

With North Ferriby not playing on Tuesday night a victory for The Pitmen would serve to ramp up the significance of their next match away to the league leaders. Rob Smith’s side cannot afford to get ahead of themselves but the match already looks like being a really pivotal moment in the early title race.
