Match Preview: Burton Albion (H)

Tuesday 04/12/2012

Hednesford Town take on Burton Albion on Tuesday night in the Birmingham Senior Cup Second Round just three days after one of their most dramatic comebacks in recent history against league-leaders North Ferriby United, no doubt keen to cause another surprise.

Burton, currently twelfth In League Two, are likely to send a far from full strength team down to Keys Park but The Pitmen faithful will remember with fondness last season’s astonishing 6-5 victory against Walsall in the same competition and hope for a positive result.

Hednesford boss Rob Smith has admitted that there may be a feeling of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s Show’ following the incredible result on Saturday but he is also confident that his squad can continue their strong run of form.

‘It’s tough to come down after a game like Saturday but I enjoy the Birmingham Senior Cup games, they have a habit of being full of goals and we have certainly got a chance.

I don’t know how strong Burton’s side will be but I would not have thought it is high on the list for Gary Rowett in terms of importance given their FA Cup and league exploits. I would guess it will be a young Burton side but no doubt full of talent.’

Smith will be looking to give some of his own young players experience of first team action with Luke Shearer and Omar Recci due to be included in the squad. Alex Melbourne is serving a one match suspension.

There have been some thoroughly enjoyable nights in the Birmingham Senior Cup in recent seasons and Hednesford will want to avoid just a fourth defeat in twenty-eight this season as they prepare for the small matter of FC United of Manchester on Saturday.
