Match Preview: Blyth Spartans (H)

Monday 08/04/2013

Hednesford Town, frustratingly held by Marine on Saturday when leaders North Ferriby could only draw against Ilkeston, will be looking to move within two points of The Villagers as they welcome Blyth Spartans to Keys Park in what is their final game in hand over their title rivals.

Despite valiant efforts by The Pitmen throughout the season to hang on to the coat tails of North Ferriby, they have always stayed just out of striking distance but a victory tomorrow will give them a fighting chance of nicking the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division over the final three weeks of the season.

Manager Rob Smith, so consistent in leading his team to two straight play off campaigns, is under no illusions that tomorrow’s game is a must win fixture and one which will put the pressure firmly back onto North Ferriby ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

‘Tomorrow is a must win game if we are to harbour any title hopes but I still believe we can win the league. There is a lot of football to be played and pressure gets to teams. That was evident on Saturday with only two out of the top ten winning.’

Newly crowned Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division Player of the Year, Elliott Durrell, will be looking to add to his haul of 22 league goals and may be joined by Dave MacPherson who returns from suspension but Nathan Woolfe has only an outside chance due to his continuing injury struggles.

Blyth are currently 16th in the table and harbour no worries about relegation nor dreams of promotion and Smith cites the pressure on his Hednesford team as a reason to enjoy what will undoubtedly be a dramatic end to a long season.

‘A lot of teams, Blyth included, are playing for nothing and would gladly swap places with us. I am really enjoying what’s been a great season and I enjoy working with this group more than any team I have managed.’

The Pitmen supporters used to, but never immune to, that feeling of nervousness and pressure annually caused by following Hednesford Town, will be hoping that a 13th home win of the season will give their team the opportunity to continue their gallant quest to reel in their rivals.
