Match Preview: Altrincham (A)

Friday 01/11/2013

The big games keep on coming for Hednesford Town as, following their vital win in the FA Cup last weekend, The Pitmen now face their toughest test of the league campaign so far, travelling to second placed Altrincham in a top of the table Skrill North clash.

The Robins are one of the favourites for promotion and Hednesford boss Rob Smith is fully aware that his in-form side must put their FA Cup exploits to the back of their minds and concentrate on the matter in hand.

“We have two very important games coming up before the Crawley game. Altrincham have the best strike force in the division and are one of the favourites to win the league. With us having injuries and suspensions this is the biggest test of the season so far for us.

“They are the best side in the league going forward, their full backs and wide men bomb on and, in Reeves and Walshaw, there is no better strike force in the league. To get anything we will have to produce our best performance of the season to date.”

Captain Darren Campion is definitely out of Saturday’s game and, with Aaron Rey doubtful and Ben Bailey and Dave Macpherson both suspended, Smith is under no illusions that a point away to such strong opposition would stand as a good result.

“We will, of course, go for all three points, this team does not know any other way and have shown that many times this season, but I would take a point all day long.”

Alty and The Pitmen have not played each other since both were in the Football Conference at the turn of the millennium and The Robins are another side who can safely be referred to as an established team at this level, having spent several seasons at the top level of non-league football in the years since.

Competing and ultimately winning against strong teams at Skrill North level has been something Smith’s fearless side have achieved regularly this season and, whilst this trip should hold no fear for The Pitmen, it is yet another opportunity where their committed band of supporters will find out how far their team has come this season and could act as an early season indicator of their promotion credentials.
