Hednesford Town 0–2 Stafford Rangers

Tuesday 18/04/2017

Hednesford Town suffered a tame defeat against local rivals Stafford Rangers in their final home game of the season.

Things could have perhaps been very different though had Tony Clarke’s looping header for Hednesford not been cleared off the line in just the third minute.

In a lively opening quarter to the game, both teams struggled to really test either goalkeeper despite both forcing a number of corners and free kicks in dangerous positions.

It would be the away side that would strike first in the 42nd minute though. A throw in found its way to midfielder Jack Sherratt and he had time to control the ball before curling it into the net via the woodwork.

Rangers almost added a second in stoppage time with Ben Haseley being denied thanks to a good tackle from Lewis Wright.

Although Hednesford also had the first half-chance of the second period, when Danny Glover saw his shot deflected wide, it would be Stafford that would strike again in the 51st minute.

Another throw into the box wasn’t dealt with and Izak Reid had time to bring the ball down and fire it low into the corner to double his side’s lead.

Two minutes later George Washbourne created a chance for himself but his curling effort went well over the Stafford crossbar.

Hednesford were desperately trying to find a way back into the game and although they were able to win a number of set pieces they were unable to test Adam Whitehouse in the Rangers goal.

Stafford also forced their fair share of corners and they went close to adding a third goal in the 73rd minute when Reid flashed an effort all the way across the goal and just past the upright.

A plethora of substitutions during the second period failed to rally either side any further and although Hednesford forced a late free kick on the edge of the box they never really came close to testing the Stafford backline.

In the end the two goals were more than enough for the visitors who were able to comfortably see out time and claim all three points.
