Merthyr Town 3-2 Hednesford Town

Sunday 06/08/2017

Hednesford Town saw their last away pre-season fixture end in defeat following an entertaining game in South Wales.

The Pitmen were without no less than six players who had been involved previously on a regular basis during pre-season, but despite this they started well. However, it was the home side that struck first in just the fourth minute when Jaye Bowen rifled home a low effort after the ball had been given away.

Although they had suffered this setback Hednesford responded well and first James Lawrie chipped a shot over before Tom Thorley saw a shot blocked with Ryan Wynter firing the rebound wide.

Thorley saw a good chance come and go in the 29th minute but the Pitmen didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser as it arrived two minutes later when Matt Dodd got to the byline and his cross was turned into the net by a combination of Lawrie and a Merthyr defender.

Five minutes later Wynter went close again before Danny Glover fired a shot over the bar for the Pitmen.

HT: 1-1

Hednesford started the second half in strong fashion and were somewhat miffed to see a goal ruled out in the 54th minute when Wynter was adjudged to have handled the ball into the net despite it coming off his chest.

Neil Tooth’s side went ahead in the 67th minute when Dodd was taken down in the penalty area and Glover confidently stepped up to convert from 12 yards.

In the 76th minute the home side equalised in a somewhat controversial fashion when, after breaking through, the ball was played past Liam Haynes to an offside Kerry Morgan who was able to tap home into an empty net.

With eight minutes to go Merthyr regained their lead after playing some good football, the ball was eventually played across the penalty area to an unmarked Jordan Islip who was able to fire home.

Hednesford’s attentions now focus towards their final pre-season game against Birmingham City U23’s at Keys Park on Tuesday night.

Hednesford Town: Haynes, Wheatley, Ballinger (Martin 80), Bailey, Oji (Mutton 60), Taylor (Palmer 80), Dodd (Melbourne 70), Thorley, Glover, Wynter (Cater 70), Lawrie.
