Kettering Town 4-0 Hednesford Town

Sunday 07/10/2018

Hednesford Town crashed out of the FA Cup against Kettering Town after conceding a hat-trick of penalties.

Rob Smith’s side went into the game without a number of first team regulars through injury or suspension – but did have new signing Dan Sweeney to call upon while goalkeeper Sheridon Martinez had also joined the squad from AFC Telford United.

It was the Pitmen who pressed forward first but they failed to get a shot away in the third minute when well-placed while nine minutes later Michael Richens sent a free header wide for the home side.

Hednesford would go close again in the 13th minute when Joe Fitzpatrick saw his low shot just about palmed away before Nathan Fox fired into the side netting.

The home side would go ahead in the 15th minute though when Callum Mendez-Jones was adjudged to have fouled Meikle in the penalty area and Brett Solkhon stepped up to score from 12 yards.

Jermain Hollis saw a deflected effort saved on the line in the 21st minute before Josef Bursik made a smart stop at his near post to keep it to one.

Kettering would be awarded their second penalty in the 32nd minute though when Joe Fitzpatrick dangled out a leg and brought down Hoenes – with Solkhon converting again into the same corner of the net.

The home side appealed for another penalty two minutes later before Callum Coyle found the net for the Pitmen but his effort was ruled out for a foul in the 36th minute.

HT: 2-0

Hednesford started the second half on top with plenty of possession but little in the way of actual attempts on goal.

The best chance of the half would come in the 65th minute when Reece King rose highest at the far post but his header was palmed out by Paul White before Lewis Archer’s lob was also cleared off the line.

The Pitmen would concede a third penalty in the 70th minute as new signing Dan Sweeney caught Kelly-Evans in a tangle of legs. Once again Solkhon placed his kick in the same corner to complete his treble and end the game as a contest.

Sweeney saw a shot easily saved two minutes later before King headed narrowly wide in the 76th minute as Hednesford looked for a way back into the game.

Kettering would add a fourth goal in the 87th minute as Lindon Meikle did well to get to byline and he drove a ball away the way across the box which was tapped home by Andrea Borg.

Although the Pitmen continued to come forward they would end with nothing to show for their efforts as their attention now turns back to the league on Tuesday evening when they travel to Nantwich Town.
