Hednesford Town fought out a hard earned draw in the wind and rain in Suffolk against Lowestoft Town, as they came closest of either side to finding a winner.
Callam Mendez-Jones was able to continue in defence after his opening day red card against Stourbridge was rightfully rescinded, Sam Griffiths’ return at right back was the only change from the side that defeated Long Eaton United on Tuesday night in the FA Cup.
The Pitmen made a bright start with both George Cater and Dan Turner testing home keeper Luis Tibbles early on. An evenly balanced encounter continued with Rhys Thompson shooting over the bar, before the Hednesford defence cleared the ball off the line. Jack Hallahan fired over from a Cater cross, Danny Glover hit the post before finding the net from an offside position as the Pitmen began to control the game. At the other end Andy Wycherley cut out a dangerous looking cross as the half ended goalless.
After the break both sides continued to search for a breakthrough in a very open game. In the 53rd minute the visitors should have taken the lead when Tibbles fouled Glover in the Trawlerboys’ area, however the Pitmen player/assistant manager missed from the penalty spot.
Cater shot wide of the post while Ben Bailey headed over from a corner, as the hosts countered with a series of corners which were well defended.
New signing Dan Sweeney, on as a substitute, came close to finding a winner on his latest return to the Pitmen, with a couple of attempts going narrowly over the bar. The game ended as a draw after a final freekick for Lowestoft was drilled into the defensive wall.
After the game Hednesford Town manager Andy Morrell commented; “It was good to get off the mark with an away point but with the chances created and the penalty miss, I believe we have missed the opportunity for all three points. We played some good football in testing conditions but need to be more ruthless in front of goal to take games away from the opposition.”
