Hednesford Town v Royston Town

Saturday 22/10/2022

Hednesford Town will be looking to start turning good performances into wins going into a run of home games starting with this Saturday’s match against Royston Town.
This is Royston’s fourth completed season at this level and they have achieved top half finishes every season. During the first Covid-affected season they were in a great position to possibly even win the title in third place with games in hand and 63 points from their 30 games.
Royston are currently 11th in the Southern League Premier Central. They had some up and down results with a 5-0 defeat at Needham Market and conceding four goals in games against Barwell and Redditch United but they’ve also had impressive wins at Rushall (3-2) and at home to Basford (3-1). They have the joint second leading goalscorer in the division with Matthew Bateman on eight goals, having scored those goals in eight separate games.
The Pitmen’s performances have improved greatly of late but since the 5-0 win at Rushden we have only got one point from three games despite playing well at Basford and at home to Tamworth and in spells at Hitchin and we need to start winning matches soon.
Hednesford manager Steve Burr has a fully fit and available squad to pick from this afternoon apart from the long term injured Riley O’Sullivan. The confidence of the players is growing with the improved performances and the management team said: “The players are in a great place at the minute, their attitude and application has been absolutely top drawer since we came in and we have seen a really big shift in the mentality.”
Royston are a good side at this level and they eased to a comfortable 2-0 win here in March on Non-League day and the Hednesford management team are fully aware of their capabilities, saying: “Royston are a strong team and have been in and around the top of the league for a number of seasons. They are a big side so we expect another tough game.”
Please get to the RACE stadium to support the players if you can as we look to get a vital three points in the fight for survival.
