Hednesford Town v Stratford Town

Friday 02/12/2022

Hednesford Town return to Southern Premier League Central Division action tomorrow afternoon when they face Stratford Town at the RACE stadium. Stratford Town are 18th in the league table at present which is just one place above the relegation zone. They have 11 more points than the Pitmen and are in the bottom three of the form table with just three points from the last six games, one more than the Pitmen who are bottom of both tables. The Bards have the 9th best home record in the league, and it is on their travels where they have struggled the most with just the three points from eight league games. We have a poor recent record against Stratford having lost both league games against them last season and also losing the league game this season which was played in August.

Stratford’s most recent game saw them draw 1-1 at home to Royston last Saturday after a 4-3 away defeat at Mickleover on the previous Saturday. Their most recent win was on 22nd October when they beat Needham Market 4-2 at home.

Stratford’s leading goalscorer in the league this season is midfielder Josh Hawker with four goals, although they have recently signed strikers Andre Wright and Mikey Taylor over the last month or so and they have scored three and two goals each already. During their most recent game, Stratford fielded no fewer than four former Pitmen with Andre Wright, Ashley Sammons, Ahmed Obeng and Paul McCone all playing for them and they have also recently signed defender Martin Riley who left us at the beginning of last month.

The Pitmen have no new injury concerns and with Chris Clements now fit enough to return, it just leaves the long-term injured Riley O’Sullivan out of contention. Hednesford progressed through to the third round of the Birmingham Senior Cup on Wednesday night with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Midland League Premier Division side Studley, and of that performance the management team said: “The performance against Studley was good. They played with everyone behind the ball and had no intention of getting forward so we had to be patient and open them up and move them around and we did that. To be fair to them I thought at times they defended really well but it was important for us to get the win as we have not had that feeling for a while.”

The County Cup competitions often gives managers the chance to field players recently signed or players not recently in the starting line-up for league games and one of those players who took his chance was 17-year-old full back Demi Akinwe, who arrived at the club just a couple of weeks ago having been released by Shrewsbury Town in the summer. The management team were especially pleased with his performance, saying: “Demi had a fantastic debut, and we were really pleased for him. He is young so we won’t get carried away, but we saw a lot of good things from him on Wednesday and we also saw things that we can work on with him. He gives us another dimension on the left so that can only be a positive thing.”

This match kicks off at the earlier than usual time of 12:30pm.
