Hednesford Town 2-2 Ilkeston Town

Saturday 04/03/2023

Hednesford Town extended their unbeaten run with an entertaining encounter at Keys Park against Ilkeston Town which ended with the points being shared. The Pitmen remained in the bottom two with Ilkeston starting the game in seventh place, albeit with a significant points gap between themselves and the play-off positions.

The first half was very similar to the previous game, a 0-0 draw with Basford United, Ilkeston had the greater share of possession but the Pitmen were able to match the visitors for opportunities. Luke Jackson made a superb save from the returning Leroy Lita, although the assistant referee had raised the offside flag. Ilkeston stopper Callum Hiddleston made a goal line clearance from a Pitmen corner as both sides tried to break the deadlock. A mazy run from Chay Tilt into the opposition box ended with a decisive pass to Jordan Graham who tucked the ball away to give the Pitmen the lead in the 38th minute. Jackson was called upon again, this time punching the ball away from a dangerous inswinging corner just before the half time break.

HT 1-0

Inevitably Lita was the scorer of Ilkeston’s equaliser, a through ball allowing him to advance into the area before delivering a low diagonal shot into the far corner of the net. A dipping shot from Ilkeston just cleared the crossbar before Kieran Fenton gave the visitors the lead heading a corner home from close range. The Pitmen came under increased pressure following the second goal surviving another corner before going close to conceding a third when Jordan Hallam hit the post. Player Manager Danny Glover who had replaced Graham, turned and twisted in the box before poking home an equaliser much to the delight of the noisy Keys Park crowd. A late injury to Harvey Portman saw Glover having to play the last five minutes of the game at centre back, as the Pitmen held on for another hard fought draw.
