Hednesford Town 1-5 City of Liverpool

Sunday 28/01/2024

Another team made their first visit to Keys Park when City of Liverpool FC came down from Merseyside for this weekend’s Northern Premier League West Division fixture against Hednesford Town.
The Pitmen made the stronger start of the two teams, Jai Verma was fouled in the second minute and debutante Rackeem Reid headed over from the resulting freekick. Another foul on Ryan Boothe gave the homeside another freekick which Jack Kelly blasted into the wall. In the 23rd minute  Kelly delivered a high quality corner kick which was headed home by Hednesford skipper Ahmed Ali to give the home side a deserved lead. The Pitmen continued to control the first half with Boothe holding the ball up well and Verma’s runs causing problems for the visitors. Verma went close with a run and shot while McQuilkin blasted over from distance as the Pitmen tried to double their advantage. City of Liverpool equalised in the 44th minute against the run of play, when a cross from the lively Jawad Jebrin was poked into the net at the far post by Elliot Morris.
HT 1-1
The game turned quickly in favour of the visitors early in the second half when Morris rounded Kieran Boucher, who was a long way out of his goal, and won a race with Kelly to stab the ball in to give City of Liverpool an expected lead. Morris turned provider in the 56th minute as the afternoon deteriorated for the Pitmen, delivering a cross for  skipper Danny Mitchley to head past Boucher to extend the visitor’s lead. Any sign of a fight back from the Pitmen was extinguished in the 65th minute when Jebrin ran down the left of the pitch and fired a great shot into the net.  Substitute Xenon Bahula scored a fifth in the 89th minute with another run and shot from the left hand side of the field. To rub salt into the wounds of the Pitmen Ahmed Ali saw a late penalty saved by Calvin Hare to end a miserable second half for the Pitmen.
