Vauxhall Motors 3-2 Hednesford Town

Thursday 19/10/2023

Hednesford made the journey up to Hooton in Ellesmere Port to play Vauxhall Motors in their latest Northern Premier League West Division fixture. Hednesford went into the game on the back of two much improved performances against Uttoxeter in the Staffs Senior Cup and Runcorn Linnets in the league while Vauxhall have lost their last three games.

A busy opening quarter of an hour saw both Max Dixon and Danny Glover have close range shots blocked before Joe Thompson had an effort which went narrowly wide. Ryan Brown made a couple of early saves as the home side threatened the Pitmen goal.  However a break away from the Pitmen saw Danny Glover go on a run inside, making space for himself to strike the ball past Alex Hughes to give the visitors a 13th minute lead.
A goal line clearance and another save from Brown preserved the Pitmen’s advantage as Motors turned up the pressure after the goal. As the half continued,  Motors dominated possession with a series of attacks and corners as the Pitmen rode their luck. Eventually Conor Harwood bundled the ball home at the far post to equalise for the home side in the 43rd minute.
HT 1-1
The Pitmen regained their lead within two minutes of the restart when Glover went to the by-line and squared an inch perfect ball for Demetri Brown to slot home.  A pivotal moment came just past the hour mark when Pitmen defender Lucas Yeomans was shown a second yellow card, reducing the visitors to ten men. The Pitmen withstood the pressure from Motors despite numerous attacks and corners until the 82nd minute when a shot following a corner hit the post with the rebound falling kindly for Thomas Mitchell to hammer home the second equaliser for Motors. Worse was to follow three minutes later when Motors recycled the ball following another corner allowing Jordan Deer to score what would prove to be the winning goal.
