A very popular young left-sided player who signed for the Pitmen in October 2010, Darren’s career began as a trainee at Birmingham, where he was a regular in their youth and reserve teams until his release in the summer of 2007, following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Trials at a number of clubs followed in pre-season and Darren impressed enough during his time at Carlisle United that he was offered a contract until the end of the season. He made his debut from the subs bench against AFC Bournemouth but only made one further appearance for the Cumbrians, being shipped out on loan to nearby Workington mid-way through the season. On his return to Brunton Park he became a regular in the reserve side and impressed enough to earn a short term deal for the 2008-09 campaign.

He was released from the club in January 2009 and made a return to the Midlands to continue his career at a semi-professional level with Solihull Moors and then Redditch United with whom he finished the 2009-10 season.

After leaving Redditch in the summer he eventually made his way to Keys Park, where he gradually worked his way into the first team after competing with Louis Keenan and Aaron Gibson in the full back position. His patience was rewarded as he became a fixture in the side at the turn of the year, becoming one of the club’s most consistent and popular players for his attacking prowess and set-piece delivery.

Darren then became a firm fans’ favourite and, although his season 2011-12 was affected by two suspensions, he put these problems behind him to lead the team in their historic and ultimately successful season 2012-13, lifting both the play-off final trophy and the Staffordshire and Birmingham Senior Cups
