Paul’s career began as a trainee at Wolverhampton Wanderers, before the defender was released from Molineux in the summer of 2010 after spending two years in the club’s development squad. Before the start of the 2010/11 season, he joined Stourbridge of the Southern League, becoming a regular fixture in the club’s defence – captaining the side on occasions. One of Paul’s finest moments at the Amblecote came in November 2011, when he opened the scoring in Stourbridge’s FA Cup 1st Round win against Plymouth Argyle.

After three years at Stourbridge he made the move to Leamington, who had just been promoted to the Skrill North, in June 2013. His stay was to be a short one though, with 6 starts for the Brakes – including their 3-2 defeat at Keys Park – before returning to Stourbridge in October.

However, McCone was on the move once more just a fortnight later, having only chalked up two more appearances for Stourbridge, making the move back to the Skrill North with the Pitmen.
